Assessment
Assessment is often the first step in gaining a clear understanding of an individual’s strengths and weaknesses. Testing batteries are tailored to meet individual needs. As such, Dr. Hollie Sobel consults with the family to determine the appropriate battery. Feedback from school personnel can also be helpful in this regard. The process is fluid. Dr. Hollie Sobel may make suggestions for changes to the selected measures based on test performance. School observations can be included in the assessment process to provide additional information with regard to children’s academic, social, and emotional/behavioral functioning. Areas assessed may include intelligence, school achievement, attention, personality, language, memory, and social-communicative skills. Written and verbal feedback are provided, as well as treatment recommendations for all pertinent settings (e.g., home and school). Dr. Hollie Sobel also conducts forensic evaluations.
Individual Therapy
Dr. Hollie Sobel works collaboratively with clients to create effective treatment plans. Your needs will change over time. As such, treatment is tailored each step of the way.
Family Therapy
When working with children, family involvement is often important in reaching treatment goals. Family sessions may also be helpful when addressing issues related to divorce, blended families, and communication difficulties.
Social Skills & Teen Group Therapy
Receiving feedback from peers is an effective component of group therapy. It can also be helpful for children and teens to realize they are not alone in their struggles. The social skills group (ages 6 – 8 and 9 - 11) uses games, role plays, and therapeutic techniques to promote good sportsmanship, problem-solving, dealing with feelings, and friendship skills. The adolescent therapy group (high schoolers) covers topics such as family relationships, friendship, peer pressure, self-esteem, future goals, dating, and feelings.
Parenting Group
The parenting group teaches behavior management principles that can help increase positive behaviors in children, decrease the negative, and develop effective, stress-relieving parenting strategies. Topics covered include: reward programs for children, how to improve the parent/child relationship, managing behavior in public, improving school behavior, and implementing house rules.
Consultation
You may question whether your child would be best served with an Individual Education Plan (IEP), 504 Plan, or transfer to a different school setting. You may wonder if your child’s Behavior Intervention Program (BIP) is appropriate. Dr. Hollie Sobel can help to answer these questions. She is available to review school records, evaluate school programs, and advocate for your child at school meetings.
